CHICAGO - A goal by junior forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community) with just under 11 minutes to play in regulation lifted the No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory over No. 18 Spring Arbor University (Mich.) Tuesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU improves to 8-3 overall, while Spring Arbor falls to 7-4-1 this season.
Senior defender Kate Bingham (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X Catholic) got the game's scoring started midway through the first half with a header that found the back of the net off a corner kick from Coby. Saint Xavier took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Spring Arbor tied the game, 1-1, just 12 minutes into the second half on a goal by junior forward Chrissie Strohmaier. Coby was able to net the game-winning score with 10:59 remaining in regulation off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley). Freshman Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./Stagg) started in goal for the Cougars and finished with eight saves.
Saint Xavier (8-3 overall, 1-2 CCAC) returns to action on Wednesday, September 27, with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) home game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). Start time for Wednesday's game is 2 p.m. in Chicago.
