Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team ran at the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, October 24. The Cougars finished 12th overall in the 24-team field led by sophomore Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with a time of 26:50, good for 49th place overall over the muddy 8K (8,000 meters) course.
Rychel was followed by sophomore Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) at 27:15 (70th place) and senior Emmanuel Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) at 27:17 (73rd place), respectively. Next for SXU was sophomore Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) in 78th place with a time of 27:28. Finishing the scoring for the Cougars was sophomore Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) at 27:51 in 101st place. He was closely tailed by juniors Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 27:52 for 102nd place and Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 28:05 in 114th place. "I am now seeing Rychel as our legitimate No. 1 runner, however, the pack is not far behind," said Saint Xavier men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "There definitely is strong improvement on a weekly basis and I expect us to be up for the challenge for conference. Olivet, Saint Francis (Ill.) and Illinois Tech all have solid teams, but I believe that we will make a solid showing." The Cougars take this weekend off before heading to the 2009 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships on Saturday, November 7, at Dellwood Park in Lockport, Ill. This meet will take place at 11 a.m. and will also serve as the qualifying meet for the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships.
