Findlay, Ohio - Saint Xavier University freshman wide receiver/quarterback Casey Wennmacher (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) and sophomore defensive tackle Patrick Appino (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) were named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, when the league released the honors early Monday. The pair had impressive individual performances in SXU's 66-6 MSFA crossover victory over visiting Iowa Wesleyan College (Iowa) this past Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. It was the final regular-season home game for the Cougars.
Wennmacher scored the first three touchdowns of his young collegiate career in Saturday's win over the Tigers. He did a little of everything catching two touchdown passes of 35 and 28 yards, respectively, completing a pass for seven yards and also rushing seven times for 49 yards and a score. Appino had a day defensively for Saint Xavier posting eight total tackles (five solos), including five tackles for losses totaling 33 yards and 3.5 sacks for 22 yards. He came just a half a sack (4) and a tackle for a loss (6) short of tying SXU single-game records for both stats, which was set by Nick Block back in 2001.
Saint Xavier (9-0 overall/5-0 MSFA) heads to Canton, Ohio, on Thursday, October 29, to take on No. 20 ranked Walsh University (Ohio) in a big MSFA Mideast League match-up. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. (central) kickoff.
