Deerfield, Ill. - Sophomore midfielder Casey Meehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored a pair of goals to lead the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team to a big 3-1 road victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity International University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon in Deerfield, Ill. The win gives the Cougars (9-7-1 overall) the No. 4 spot in the conference standings with one game left to play on the schedule. The top four teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season host a first-round playoff game in next week's CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, October 31.
Meehan notched the game's first goal nearly 20 minutes into regulation when she took advantage of a nice cross from junior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and found the back of the net. TIU tied the game, 1-1, before the half on a header off a free kick from 30 yards out in the 69th minute. Ten minutes later, Meehan put SXU up again, 2-1, when she poked the ball into the goal from 10 yards out following a scramble in the box. The assist came off the foot of senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg). With just over five minutes to play in the game, sophomore midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) added some insurance by sending a nice shot to the far-side netting from 20 yards away off a beautiful pass by freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew).
Saint Xavier (9-7-1 overall/ 5-3-1 CCAC) plays its regular season finale on Tuesday, October 27, in Elgin, Ill., taking on Judson University (Ill.). The conference road game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
