CHICAGO - A goal by junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North) on a penalty kick in overtime gave the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars (11-3-1 overall) take over sole possession of second place in the conference standings with a 5-1-1 record and 16 total points. The Tigers drop to 10-6-0 overall and 5-3-0 (15 points) in the conference with Saturday's loss.
After a scoreless first half, SXU took the 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) punched it into the lower right corner of the goal on a deflected shot off the ONU goalkeeper. With less than four minutes to play in regulation, the Tigers tied the game, 1-1, with a goal by sophomore forward Raphael Correa set up by a corner kick by senior midfielder Jose Villa. Just over seven minutes into overtime, sophomore forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) was tackled in the box setting up the penalty kick attempt for the Cougars. With 97:30 on the clock, Johnson got the PK attempt past Olivet junior keeper Kenny Huber to gain the victory. Senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with five saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (11-3-1 overall/5-1-1 CCAC) heads to Elgin, Ill., on Wednesday, October 28, to take on league-leading Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
