Joliet, Ill. - Racking up 15 saves and allowing just one goal over two games, junior goalkeeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon for the week ending October 18. The Cougars went 1-1 in a pair of conference games on the week defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 7-0, but then dropping a heartbreaker to No. 14 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 1-0, in overtime. It was the second time Shugar has claimed the weekly honor this season with her first recognition coming on September 8.
Shugar posted her fourth shutout of the year in SXU's first game last week against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). Against Olivet Nazarene, she had a huge game racking up 15 saves and keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard until just over three minutes into the overtime period. Shugar currently ranks third in the CCAC with a 0.88 goals against average (GAA) and ranks fifth with her 84 saves.
Saint Xavier (8-6-1 overall/ 4-2-1 CCAC) travels to Palos Heights, Ill., to take on conference foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) this afternoon. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
