St. Augustine, Fla. - A goal by sophomore forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) off a corner kick in the 77th minute of play gave the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team a big 1-0 victory over NCAA Division II Flagler College (Fla.) Saturday evening in St. Augustine, Fla. It was the first time the Cougars have swept their annual, two-game Florida trip after winning a 2-1 thriller in overtime against Northwood University (Fla.) last Thursday. In addition, senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) earned his eighth shutout of the year in the winning effort.
Sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) set up the game-winning score by providing the assist off the corner kick. Pickett finished the game with 10 saves. SXU has not been beaten since September 26, a 1-0 road loss to conference foe Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). Since then, the Cougars have won four games and tied rival University of St. Francis (Ill.), 1-1.
Saint Xavier (9-3-1 overall/3-1-1 CCAC) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, taking on Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Palos Heights, Ill. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 p.m., but was recently changed due to a scheduling conflict.
