St. Augustine, Fla. - A goal by junior midfielder Al Bickel (Aurora, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Waubonsie Valley) in the 97th minute of play broke a 1-1 tie and gave Saint Xavier University a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Northwood University (Fla.) in NAIA men's soccer action Thursday afternoon in St. Augustine, Fla. The game-winning score was set up off a nice cross by sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). SXU improves to 8-3-1 overall with Thursday's win, while the Seahawks fall to 8-5-1 on the season.
Northwood scored the game's first goal in the 27th minute of action when sophomore forward Victor Lindstrom found a hole in the left side of the goal and punched it through off an assist from sophomore forward Alvaro Romo. Just 16 minutes later, Saint Xavier tied the game, 1-1, when sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) sent a beautiful shot into the back of the goal from 18 yards out off a long ball assist from senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic). After a scoreless second half, the game went to overtime where Bickel ended the game just over seven minutes into the extra period. Pickett finished with six saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (8-3-1 overall/3-1-1 CCAC) wraps up its Florida trip on Saturday, October 17, with a game against NCAA Division II Flagler College (Fla.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start in St. Augustine, Fla.
