CHICAGO - Despite seven kills and two service aces by sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team fell to No. 11 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in three sets (23-25, 13-25, 16-25) Tuesday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (12-15 overall) drop to 2-3 in the conference standings with the loss, while the Tigers improve their league record to 6-0 and sit at 19-7 overall. ONU started the first game of the match slow offensively, but warmed up quickly in games two and three combining for 34 kills and only three errors in the final two sets.
In addition to Scudder, freshmen outside hitters Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) each added seven kills for Saint Xavier. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) set up a majority of the SXU offense Tuesday finishing with 21 assists, while sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) tallied a team-best 12 digs defensively. Junior right side Tara Schmidt led Olivet Nazarene's offensive attack with a match-best 15 kills.
Saint Xavier (12-15 overall/2-3 CCAC) will take on non-conference NAIA foe Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Thursday, October 15, in a road match at Palos Courts in Palos Heights, Ill. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
