Whiting, Ind. - Led by two goals by junior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team had little trouble claiming a 7-0 road victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Tuesday afternoon in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars (8-5-1 overall) improved to 4-1-1 in the conference standings behind six first-half goals in the game. In addition, junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois/Lake Orion) recorded her fourth shutout of the season with Tuesday's win.

Just over five minutes into regulation, freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) notched the game's first goal on an unassisted breakaway. Steinhaus would then score the next two goals for SXU in the 12th and 15th minutes, respectively. Her first goal came off an assist from Peele, while a pass from junior defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) set up the second score. In the 20th minute, senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) found the back of the net off an assist by senior midfielder Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). An unassisted goal by freshman defender Amanda Wessel (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and a goal by junior midfielder Katie DuPree (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) off a pass from freshman forward Samantha Formella (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) wrapped up the first-half scoring. Midway through the second half, sophomore defender Brittany DeRiggi (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) sent a shot into the goal from 30 yards out to complete the scoring.

Saint Xavier (8-5-1 overall/4-1-1 CCAC) will host league-leading Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Cougars have labeled the game "Cougs Kick Cancer" and will be selling T-shirts and holding a raffle to help raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
