CHICAGO - With two of its senior runners finishing among the top 10 individually, the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's cross country team garnered a second-place finish out of the six teams competing at the Bethel College (Ind.) Invitational Saturday at Saint Patrick's County Park in South Bend, Ind. The only team to finish ahead of the Cougars was Indiana Wesleyan University, a team currently ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll. Seniors Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) finished sixth (19:08.23) and seventh place (19:11.17), respectively, on the 5K (5,000 meters) course.
"The thing I enjoyed most about this meet was that it gave us a good indicator of where we rank against NAIA competition," said Saint Xavier women's cross country coach Lisa Ebel. "It was a great experience to line up against a top tier team like Indiana Wesleyan and it gave our team a lot of motivation. We will get this opportunity again in two weeks when we run at the Great Lakes Invitational."
Senior Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was next up for the Cougars in 19:35.15 for 16th place, while junior Kelly Malone (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) earned 19th place with a time of 19:44.68. Junior Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) also ran a tough race for SXU with a time of 19:59.20 good enough for 25th place. Junior Dana Eppley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) claimed 27th place out of the 77 runners competing Saturday with a time of 20:05.28 and junior Katy Thomson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted a time of 21:28.49 to finish in 46th place.
Saint Xavier takes this weekend off before returning to action at the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, October 24. The women's race is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (eastern) start.
