South Bend, Ind. - Led by sophomore Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team had a strong third-place showing in the six-team field at the Bethel College Invitational in South Bend, Ind., this past weekend. Indiana Wesleyan University won the meet with 30 points, with Taylor University (Ind.) finishing second with 49, followed by the Cougars with 54, host Bethel College (Ind.) at 111; University of Saint Francis (Ind.), 135 and Grace College (Ind.) with 150. Rychel, who finished fifth out of the 54 runners competing, in a time of 26:54 over the 8K (8,000 meters) course.
Sophomore Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) followed Rychel in ninth place at 27:13, while senior Emmanuel Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) finished in 10th place with a time of 27:14. Sophomore Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) finished in 14th place at 27:37, while junior Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) and sophomore Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) rounded out the Cougar scorers in 16th (27:41) and 21st place (28:01), respectively. "This is unquestionably our best meet thus far," said Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "We packed very well for most of the race. We have been very tired from numerous challenging races. However, I truly believe that we will be starting to reach our peak very soon." The Cougars are off this weekend and will next compete in the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Mich., on October 24. The men's race is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
