Marion, Ind. - Behind a combined 46 kills over four matches by freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team won one of its four matches on the weekend at the Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) Invitational in Marion, Ind. The Cougars (12-14 overall) lost its first match of the event Friday to No. 23 Taylor University (Ind.) in three sets (29-31, 12-25, 17-25), but bounced back in its second match of the day against McKendree University (Ill.) winning in five (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-12). SXU then dropped both of its Saturday matches, the first to host Indiana Wesleyan in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 17-25) and the second to Davenport University (Mich.) in five (27-25, 16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 11-15).

Freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) recorded a team-best 11 kills in Saint Xavier's first match against Taylor, while Knudsen finished with eight kills. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) also had a solid outing against Taylor posting 23 assists, nine digs and six total blocks (four solos). In the victory over McKendree, Knudsen led the charge with 18 kills. Mullaney recorded 12 kills, three service aces and 10 digs; while sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) posted 36 assists.

Knudsen and senior right side Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) each finished with eight kills in Saturday's first match against Indiana Wesleyan. In addition, Knudsen also racked up eight digs and five service aces in the match. August finished with 24 assists to lead the Cougars. In the final match of the Invitational, Mullaney posted 13 kills and eight digs to lead SXU. Knudsen and Galas each recorded 12 kills, while Major tallied 35 assists and team-best 13 digs.

Saint Xavier (12-14 overall/2-2 CCAC) hosts its first home match since September 8 when Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) comes to town on Tuesday, October 13. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
