CHICAGO - Behind 10 saves from senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Pickett has now posted seven shutouts this season, one for each win that the Cougars have recorded in 2009 thus far (7-3-1 overall). SXU improves to a league-leading 3-1-1 in the conference standings with the win, while IIT falls to 1-2-0 in the CCAC and 5-6-0 overall.
Both goals for Saint Xavier came in the second half. Just over nine minutes into the second frame, sophomore forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) used a header off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) to net the game's first goal. The Cougars added a little insurance to their lead in the 63rd minute of play when junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North) converted a penalty kick into the top right corner of the goal. Pickett had a spectacular save midway through the second half to secure the shutout when he dove in front of a penalty kick attempt by the Scarlet Hawks.
Saint Xavier (7-3-1 overall/3-1-1 CCAC) takes a break from its conference slate and heads down to Florida for the Florida Soccer Classic. The Cougars kick off the trip with a 2 p.m. (central) game against Northwood University (Fla.) on Thursday, October 15.
