CHICAGO - Paced by a 156th place individual finish by sophomore Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team ran tough at the prestigious 37th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational sponsored by Loyola University (Ill.) on Saturday, October 3. The Cougars finished 23rd among the 39 teams participating in this festive cross country extravaganza. Peters was No. 156 among the 408 runners competing with a time of 27:41 on the 8K (8,000 meters) course.
Next across the finish line for Saint Xavier was senior Emmanuel Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 176th place with 27:55. Sophomore Dan Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) finished in 188th place at 28:02, while sophomore Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) clocked 28:09 good enough for 196th place. Other Cougar finishers Saturday were sophomore Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 214th place at 28:24, sophomore Buck Hill (Streator, Ill./Ottawa-Marquette) in 215th with a time of 28:25, junior Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) at No. 237 at 28:51 and junior Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) in 245th place with a time of 28:58. "This was the fourth different runner to be our lead man in five races," said Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "I still feel that we are a significantly better team than we have recently shown, and illnesses and injuries have hampered us thus far. Andy ran a solid race and Emmanuel and Dan are becoming our most consistent runners. When we step back and compete against more NAIA teams, it will be interesting to see where we fit." SXU heads to South Bend, Ind., this Saturday for the Bethel College (Ind.) Invitational. The men's race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. CDT on Saturday, October 10, at Saint Patrick's County Park in South Bend. This will be a much smaller meet with the Cougars only facing five other squads.Click here for results from the 37th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational
