CHICAGO - Led by senior Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) with a 53rd place individual finish, the No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University women's cross country team finished No. 16 out of the 34 teams competing Saturday at the 37th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. The Cougars held their own in a meet loaded with talented NCAA Division I programs and had the second-best finish out of the seven NAIA institutions in attendance with Aquinas College (Mich.) finishing No. 11 overall in the team standings. Poull finished the 5,000-meter race (5K) with a time of 19:18.
"This is always an exciting meet for our team, because it pits us against some really competitive teams from around the nation," said Saint Xavier women's cross country coach Lisa Ebel. "I am happy with the team's performance this weekend, but I am extremely anxious to continue our season, because the rest of our schedule is against NAIA competition."
Senior Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) finished nine seconds after Poull in 63rd place at 19:27. Senior Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was next up in 19:44 for 94th place, while junior Kelly Malone (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) earned 124th place with a time of 20:10. Junior Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) rounded out the top five finishers for SXU with a time of 20:17 good enough for 129th place.
Saint Xavier heads to South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, October 10, to take part in the Bethel College (Ind.) Invitational.
