Women's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 3, 2009
CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University women's soccer team dominated regulation out-shooting rival University of St. Francis (Ill.), 29-4, including a 17-4 advantage on shots-on-goal, but a goal off a free kick in the final three seconds of regulation tied the game, 1-1, and forced a pair of overtime periods before ending in a tie in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Freshman midfielder Ashley Zukowski, who was playing in goal for injured senior starter Ashley Kekelik, recorded the game-tying goal on a free kick attempt from 45 yards out. The shot sailed right over the outstretched fingers of SXU junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) into the top left corner of the goal as time expired.
The Cougars scored the game's first goal just over four minutes into regulation when senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) sent a short cross pass to sophomore midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) for the score in the box. Shugar played all 110 minutes in goal for the Cougars and finished with two saves. Kekelik started the game in goal for the Fighting Saints and played just over 51 minutes with six saves, while Zukowski finished the final 58 minutes of play and posted 10 saves for USF.
Saint Xavier (6-5-1 overall/2-1-1 CCAC) continues conference play on Wednesday, October 7, with another home game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
