Men's Soccer - Fri, Oct. 2, 2009
CHICAGO - Despite a first-half goal by junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not prevent an early second-half goal by University of St. Francis (Ill.) and played to a 1-1 tie in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (6-3-1 overall) got a huge performance in goal by senior Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic), who finished with 10 saves over the 110-minute affair.

Johnson notched the game's first goal just over 10 minutes into regulation when he got free deep in the box and took advantage of a nice pass from sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). SXU carried a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, but just under seven minutes into the second period, Pickett was drawn out of the box and the Fighting Saints were able to capitalize with a uncontested shot-on-goal by freshman midfielder Victor Trujillo to tie things up. USF finished with 11 shots-on-goal in the game compared to just four for the Cougars. Senior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) recorded three shots-on-goal to lead SXU on the night.

Saint Xavier (6-3-1 overall/2-1-1 CCAC) continues its CCAC slate on Tuesday, October 6, with a home game against Illinois Institute of Technology (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
