CHICAGO - A goal in the game's 26th minute off a penalty kick by junior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North) helped spark a 3-0 victory for Saint Xavier University over Holy Cross College (Ind.) Wednesday night in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's soccer action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In addition, SXU senior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded his sixth shutout of the season behind three saves. The Cougars improve to 6-3-0 overall with the win and are now 2-1 in the conference standings.
In addition to Johnson's first-half goal, Saint Xavier added two more scores in the second half to secure the victory. The first came in the 68th minute when sophomore midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) capitalized on a deflected shot off the Saints' goalkeeper for an unassisted goal. Just under 10 minutes later, sophomore midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) took advantage of a short throw by the Holy Cross keeper and was able to take control of the ball and find the back of the net on an unassisted breakaway. The Cougars were aggressive offensively throughout the game out-shooting the Saints, 23-8, and held an 8-3 advantage on shots-on-goal as well.
Saint Xavier (6-3-0 overall/2-1-0 CCAC) continues its home stand on Friday, October 2, with a 7 p.m. game against CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
