CHICAGO - Freshman forward Samantha Formella (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) recorded four goals and an assist to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team to a 12-0 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Holy Cross College (Ind.) Tuesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars were in control of the game from the onset, scoring eight goals in first half action and adding four more after halftime, while playing every player on their active roster. With the win, SXU improves to 6-5-0 overall and moves to 2-1 in the conference standings.
Freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished with two goals and two assists for Saint Xavier, while sophomore midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) chipped in a pair of goals and an assist as well. Senior midfielder Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) had a goal and two assists Tuesday and senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) set up two scores as well with a couple of assists. Also scoring a goal in Tuesday's big victory were sophomore defender Casey Meehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), sophomore midfielder Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) and senior forward Kelsey Miller (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley). Junior Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) and senior Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) each played a half in goal with Shugar getting no saves and Grant finishing with three stops.
Saint Xavier (6-5-0 overall/2-1 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, October 3, with a home game against CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
