Milwaukee, Wis. - A goal on a penalty kick by senior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) in the 10th minute of play helped lift Saint Xavier University to a 2-0 road win over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cougars (5-5-0 overall) got a solid defensive effort from junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion), who picked up her second shutout of the season behind three saves. SXU was aggressive offensively throughout the 90-minute affair posting 20 shots on the day compared to just six by the Wolves.
Just over eight minutes into the second half, Saint Xavier got an insurance goal when junior defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) sent a pass to sophomore midfielder Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) for the game's second score. The Cougars finished Saturday's game with eight different players each recording a shot-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (5-5-0 overall/1-1 CCAC) continues its CCAC slate on Tuesday, September 29, with a home game against conference newcomer Holy Cross College (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
