Kissimmee, Fla. - Sophomore leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Saint Xavier University softball team to a 9-1 victory in six innings over NCAA Division II Urbana University (Ohio) in its season opener Sunday afternoon as part of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In addition, SXU head coach Myra Minuskin notched her 300th victory at Saint Xavier University boosting her career record with the Cougars to 300-142 in her ninth season at the helm. Minuskin's collegiate career record is 455-277 overall heading into her 14th season as a head coach. The Cougars dropped their second game of the afternoon, 6-5, to NCAA Division II foe Gannon University (Pa.).

In Sunday's first game, junior rightfielder Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and had a run scored and two RBI, while sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) also played well going 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI. Senior designated player Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) recorded a two-RBI single to spark a big six-run third inning for Saint Xavier. The game was tied, 1-1, heading into the bottom of the third inning when SXU scored six runs to pull away for good. Ruettiger's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth ended things early due to the eight-run lead. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) notched the win (1-0) on the mound throwing all six innings and allowing just three hits, one run (earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.

In the day's second game, the Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first inning off a RBI groundout by sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) and a RBI single by freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora), respectively. However, Gannon University responded with five runs over the first two innings to build a 5-2 advantage. SXU scored a run in the fourth off a RBI single by Hannigan and then tied the game in the fifth when Kennedy posted a RBI double and Hunter got a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Despite logging two outs to start the bottom of the seventh, Gannon took advantage of a Saint Xavier infield error and later scored on a RBI single to win the game. Sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the offense for SXU going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Saint Xavier (1-1 overall) continues play at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday, March 2, with a pair of games against Clarke College (Iowa) and Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.). The first game Monday is at 1 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. start for game two.
