Romeoville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team completed their 2009 indoor season at the Dick Pond Invitational hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., on Saturday, February 21. This was the last chance for the Cougars to qualify their athletes for the 2009 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. While the Cougars failed to achieve any additional qualifying marks, freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) highlighted the meet by finishing second in the mile run with a time of 4:23.27, narrowly missing the NAIA's qualifying standard by .21 seconds. Freshman KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) finished in third place in the 55-meter dash with a solid time of 6.69 seconds and the two-mile relay team, consisting of sophomore Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton), Rychel, freshman Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) and freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) won the relay in 8:16.9. "Close ... very, very close, but not quite," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "It would have been a fitting conclusion to a great freshman season for Matt. He deserved it, but it was not meant to be. We had a number of solid performances and I believe that the relay team will be ready next week." The Cougars wrap up their indoor season at the NAIA National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., on March 5-8. The Cougars have qualified a distance medley relay (DMR) team and Franklin will compete as an individual qualifier in the 55-meter dash.
