CHICAGO - Despite 16 points apiece by Saint Xavier University senior forwards Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) and Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) on "Senior Day," a three-pointer by senior guard Tyler Leighton with one second remaining in overtime proved to be the difference as Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) claimed a 79-77 road victory over the hosts in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Leighton finished with a game-high 31 points to lead the Titans hitting 11 of his 22 shot attempts from the floor. The Cougars fall to 15-13 overall with the loss and drop to 4-4 and tied for third place in the conference standings.

Freshman point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) also scored in double figures for SXU Saturday with 11 points, while senior guard Nick Wirth (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) chipped in 10 points off the bench. Broughton led the Cougars on the boards with 10 rebounds. IUSB shot well hitting 49 percent (29-for-59) of its shots from the field, while SXU connected on 44 percent (32-for-73) of its field goal attempts in the game. The Titans won the rebounding battle, 43-34, but finished with 22 turnovers compared to just 12 miscues by the Cougars. Indiana University-South Bend got all its offensive production from its five starters with no bench players scoring in the game.

IUSB got off to a hot start building a 10-point lead, 21-11, in the game's first nine minutes. However, over the next two-and-a-half minutes, Saint Xavier erased the lead and tied the game, 23-23, with an impressive 12-2 run capped by a jumper by Campbell. The Cougars took their first lead of the game, 24-23, with 8:02 left in the first half on a free throw by junior point guard Jamel Morton (Maywood, Ill./Walther Lutheran). A three-pointer by Leighton gave IUSB a 30-28 lead at the halftime break. In the second half, the Titans controlled nearly the entire period until a late rally by SXU closed the gap to a point, 65-64, on a three-pointer by Gilgenbach with just over two minutes left in regulation.

Saint Xavier had a chance to win the game in the final 30 seconds, but missed two jumpers in the closing seconds to send the game to overtime tied, 69-69. The game went back-and-forth in the extra period and back-to-back lay-ups by Broughton and Wirth gave SXU a one-point lead, 77-76, with 15 seconds remaining. However, Leighton threw up a tough shot deep in three-point range and it banked into the basket for the win with one second left on the game clock.

Saint Xavier (15-13 overall/4-4 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Tuesday, February 24, for a match-up against CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) to decide who will move into third-place in the league standings. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
