CHICAGO - Despite game-highs of 30 points and five steals by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team dropped an overtime thriller to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB), 83-78, Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The loss ends a 12-game win streak for the Cougars (21-4 overall), who have not been defeated since falling 71-68 to No. 13 ranked Campbellsville University (Ky.) on a buzzer-beating three-pointer in Honolulu, Hawaii, back on December 20, 2008. Saturday's game also marks the first loss for SXU in the Shannon Center this season (11-1) and its first of the conference season (7-1).
In addition to Hannemann, three other Saint Xavier players scored in double figures Saturday, including senior forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) with 12 points and team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore point guards Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) and Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Katie Hacker had a monster game for the Titans recording 28 points and 17 rebounds. The Cougars were able to put pressure on IUSB and had 16 steals, which helped lead to 29 Titan turnovers. However, rebounding and foul trouble plagued SXU throughout the game. Indiana University-South Bend won the battle of the boards, 51-28, and Saint Xavier had two of its starters, Amure and Barone, foul out late in the game.
The Cougars started the game strong jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first seven minutes of play. However, the Titans stormed back and tied the game, 21-21, with five minutes remaining in the first half. Things stayed tight the rest of the half and the two teams went into the break with the score knotted, 31-31. In the second half, IUSB took control early and built a 10-point advantage, 51-41, with 11 minutes left in regulation. Over the next five minutes, SXU regained its composure and erased the lead tying the score, 57-57, at the six-minute mark. The game was back-and-forth for the rest of regulation and the Titans took a two-point lead, 70-68, with 21 seconds to play. However, junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) hit a jumper with five seconds left in regulation to force the extra period. Unfortunately for SXU, seven fouls told the tale in overtime with IUSB hitting 13 of its 14 free throw attempts and scoring all 13 of its points at the line. The game had 13 lead changes as well as 13 ties.
Saint Xavier (21-4 overall/7-1 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Tuesday, February 24, to take on CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
