CHICAGO - Behind five three-pointers and team-high 19 points from senior guard Amir Resic (Prijedor, Bosnia/East-West/Mather), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled away midway through the first half and cruised to a big 76-56 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (15-12 overall/4-3 CCAC) shot an impressive 58 percent (14-for-24) from the field in the first half and built a 39-23 lead at the halftime break. Freshman point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) had a stellar all-around game for SXU as well finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) also scored in double figures in Saturday's win posting 15 points to go along with his eight rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Gunderson had a huge outing for the Fighting Saints scoring a game-high 24 points after shooting an impressive 8-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc. Saint Xavier controlled every facet of the game out-rebounding USF, 38-28, and collecting 12 steals off of 18 Saints turnovers. SXU wrapped up the game shooting 52 percent (28-for-54) from the field, including an outstanding 8-for-16 clip from three-point range. The Cougars also got nice production from their bench with the reserves contributing for 21 of the team's 76 points.
Saint Xavier (15-12 overall/4-3 CCAC) will resume its season and conference slate on Saturday, February 21, with its final regular-season home game against CCAC foe Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
