Bloomington, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's indoor track team participated in the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., this past Saturday. The highlight of the day was the distance medley relay (DMR) race where the team consisting of freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), freshman Dan Spencer (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), sophomore Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) and freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew eclipsed the NAIA national qualifying time of 10:33.5 with an outstanding clocking of 10:30.72. This is the first Cougar men's relay team to qualify for the NAIA National Championship event. Also, freshman KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) barely missed qualifying in the 55-meter dash with a fine time of 6.71 seconds. "This was probably the last good opportunity for this relay team to qualify," stated SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "We are a bit injured and I wasn't even sure we were going to run the relay until the last minute. Give a ton of credit to the determination of these four men, they were not to be denied. We have two more meets to qualify individuals for Nationals and I'm hoping on three or four of our guys making it." The Cougars take the weekend off in preparation for the Chicagoland Championships hosted the University of Chicago on February 14 in Chicago. The meet is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
