CHICAGO - Three first half goals by the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team was enough to propel the Cougars over University of Saint Francis (Ind.), 4-1, in non-conference action Sunday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. The Cougars (7-2-1 overall) also added an insurance goal in the second half to cruise to their third straight victory.
Sophomore midfielder Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) kicked off the first-half scoring surge for SXU with a goal in the seventh minute of play off assists from sophomore midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Bryan) and freshman midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley), respectively. Senior midfielder Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) scored the Cougars' next goal 22 minutes later on a pass from sophomore forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community).
Saint Xavier added a third goal just five minutes later (34th minute) when Coby found the back of the net off an assist from Sudar to build a 3-0 halftime advantage. Junior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) picked up SXU's fourth and final score 15 minutes into the second half on assists from Scigalski and Coby, respectively. Saint Francis (Ind.) tacked on its lone goal in the game in the 88th minute of regulation.
Senior goalkeeper Melissa Painter (Elk Grove, Calif./William Penn University) recorded seven saves for Saint Xavier. The Cougars outshot Saint Francis, 20-11, in the game and had four corner kicks compared to none for USF.
SXU (7-2-1 overall/2-1 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Wednesday, September 28, taking on Judson College (Ill.) on the road in Elgin, Ill. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
