Men's Basketball - Tue, Jan. 27, 2009
Joliet, Ill. - Senior guard Paris Davis (Maywood, Ill./St. Joseph) scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to a 71-65 road win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday night at the USF Recreation Center in Joliet, Ill. The victory ends a five-game losing streak for the Cougars, who improve to 11-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play. USF falls to 10-12 overall on the season and 1-2 in the CCAC standings with the loss.
Davis was one of five SXU players to score in double figures Tuesday. Senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) finished with 14 points, while junior guard Larry Pikes (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) and freshman guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each chipped in 12 points. Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) recorded a double-double with 10 points and team-best 11 rebounds for the Cougars. Saint Xavier did not shoot particularly well hitting just 37 percent (24-for-65) of its shots from the field. However, SXU did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball committing just seven turnovers in Tuesday's win.
Neither team ever got a comfortable lead in the game and the score was knotted, 31-31, at the half. Despite leading nearly the entire second half, the Cougars never built more than an eight-point advantage. With one minute to play in regulation, the Fighting Saints cut the lead to three, 68-65, with a three-pointer by freshman guard Billy Hubly. However, SXU went to the free-throw line eight times in the final minute and converted five of those attempts to pull away and get the victory.
Saint Xavier (11-11 overall/1-2 CCAC) returns home to take on CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, January 31. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
