South Bend, Ind. - Despite trailing by eight points with eight minutes left to play in regulation, the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team finished strong and defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB), 82-78, Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (16-3 overall/2-0 CCAC) were led by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), who finished with a game-high 27 points in addition to her four rebounds and four steals.
SXU also had junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) play well with 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. In fact, all five starters for Saint Xavier scored in double figures Saturday with sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) posting 14 points and senior forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) and sophomore guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) chipping in 10 points apiece. The Cougar defense recorded 18 steals and helped to force 30 IUSB turnovers, including five miscues in the game's final three minutes. SXU shot well in the second half hitting 55 percent (17-for-31) of its field goal attempts to help pull off the comeback victory.
Saint Xavier (16-3 overall/2-0 CCAC) heads to Joliet, Ill., on Wednesday, January 28, to take on conference rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
