Women's Basketball - Tue, Jan. 13, 2009
CHICAGO - Behind a double-double performance of 18 points and school-record 18 rebounds by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team defeated visiting Robert Morris College (Ill.), 67-52, in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener for both teams Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (13-3 overall/1-0 CCAC) got off to a slow start offensively, but were able to recover and took a 31-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Hannemann breaks current SXU assistant coach Jackie Heine's single-game rebounding mark of 16 boards, which was set against Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.) on January 4, 2008.
Junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) also scored in double figures Tuesday for the Cougars finishing with 12 points. Junior guard Jessica Harris led all scorers with 22 points for the Eagles. Hannemann shot an impressive 8-for-9 from the field in Tuesday's victory and also recorded four assists, three steals and a blocked shot toward the winning effort. RMC jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the game's first five minutes, but SXU used a 20-6 scoring run over the next 10 minutes of play to take control of the game for good. The Cougars led by as many as 19 points, 49-30, with 12 minutes to play in regulation before a 16-2 run by the Eagles cut the lead to just five, 51-46, on a three-pointer by junior guard Ashley Williams. However, a trey by McClain sparked a 10-0 run by the Cougars to put the game away in the closing minutes.
Saint Xavier (13-3 overall/1-0 CCAC) continues its home stand on Saturday, January 17, by taking on Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The non-conference game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
