Men's Basketball - Thu, Jan. 8, 2009
Edwardsville, Ill. - Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team closed to within three, 64-61, with just over four minutes to play, but that was as close as it would get as NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) picked up the 80-72 victory Thursday night at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. Junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) and senior guard Paris Davis (Maywood, Ill./St. Joseph) each paced the Cougars with 17 points apiece, while senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) had a double-double performance of 16 points and 17 rebounds.
Freshman point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) also finished in double figures in scoring for SXU with 11 points. The Cougars got off to a hot start taking an early 16-10 lead in the game's first seven minutes sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Gilgenbach. With seven minutes left in the first half, Saint Xavier led 29-22 before SIUE closed out the half with a 14-4 run to take a 36-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
SXU started the second half ice cold and SIUE took complete advantage building a 17-point lead, 55-38, in the half's first nine minutes. However, the Cougars did not fold and chipped away at the big deficit over the game's next six minutes. A three-point play by Broughton with 4:25 remaining closed the gap to three points, 64-61, but big shots by SIUE down the stretch kept the game from getting any closer. SXU hit 10 three-pointers in the ballgame, but were hampered by 24 turnovers and poor free-throw shooting (14-for-24).
Saint Xavier (10-9 overall) heads back to Chicago and will open its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Wednesday, January 14, with a home match-up against No. 13 ranked Robert Morris College (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
