Women's Basketball - Mon, Dec. 29, 2008
CHICAGO - Paced by 30 points and six rebounds by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team hung on for a 80-74 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the championship game of the 2008 SXU Holiday Tournament Monday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Hannemann was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) following the championship, while junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) and sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) both earned spots on the 2008 All-Tournament Team.
McClain finished Monday's game with 19 points and six assists, while Barone scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds. Senior forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) was the only other Cougar to score in double figures Monday recording 12 points in addition to her team-bests of nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. SXU took advantage of 23 USF turnovers scoring 20 of its 80 points off the miscues. The Cougars also did a good job of hitting their free throws, especially down the stretch, connecting on 27 of their 33 attempts from the line (82 percent). Saint Xavier led by just three, 37-34, at the halftime break despite jumping out to an early 12-2 lead in the game's first four minutes. The second half was extremely tight until SXU was able to go ahead by eight, 73-65, with just over two minutes to play in regulation. Barone hit all six of her free-throw attempts in the final minute to secure the win.
The remainder of the 2008 SXU Holiday All-Tournament Team included: St. Vincent College (Pa.) senior guard Janelle Reed, Siena Heights University (Mich.) junior guard Tanci Levit, Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) junior guard Lecreia Hudson, Aquinas College (Mich.) junior center Joslyn Narber, Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) sophomore forwards Ali Dolphin and Mary Burmeister, and University of St. Francis (Ill.) senior guard Amanda Mistretta and junior guard Katie Carls.
Saint Xavier (12-3 overall) takes two weeks off before opening up its CCAC slate on Tuesday, January 13, with a home game against Robert Morris College (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
