Men's Basketball - Mon, Dec. 29, 2008
West Palm Beach, Fla. - A three-pointer by senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) at the buzzer gave the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team a thrilling 74-72 victory over NCAA Division III Illinois Wesleyan University (Ill.) Monday at the Northwood University Comfort Inn Christmas Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla. Broughton finished the game with a game-high 24 points in addition to his team-best six rebounds. The Cougars improve to 10-6 overall with the win, while IWU falls to 6-3 on the year.
Junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) was the only other SXU player to score in double figures Monday finishing with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. The Cougars had a slow start and shot poorly in the first half allowing Illinois Wesleyan to build an 11-point advantage 10 minutes into the game. SXU closed the gap slightly before halftime and trailed by eight, 33-25, at the intermission. Saint Xavier connected on just 31 percent of its shots (11-for-36) from the field in first half action.
However in the second half, the Cougar offense heated up and used a 9-0 run to tie the game, 49-49, with 11 minutes to play on a four-point play by freshman guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac). The game remained close the rest of the way, and in the final minute, an IWU lay-up with seven seconds to play gave the Titans a 72-71 lead. However, Broughton was able to get off a three-pointer in the closing seconds to capture the exciting victory. SXU shot an impressive 60 percent from the field (18-for-30) in the second half, including a 6-for-11 clip (55 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
Saint Xavier (10-6 overall) will take on host Northwood University (Fla.) on Tuesday, December 30, in the championship game of the four-team Comfort Inn Christmas Classic. The championship is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Fla.
