CHICAGO - Junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) hit 10 of her 12 shot attempts, including three three-pointers, and finished with a game-high 23 points to help lead No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) to a 75-67 victory over NCAA Division III foe Saint Vincent College (Pa.) in collegiate women's basketball action Saturday on day one of the 2008 Saint Xavier University Holiday Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 10-3 overall with the win, while the Bearcats drop to 6-2 on the season. SXU led 40-22 at the half after shooting an impressive 63 percent (17-for-27) in first-half action, but a late rally allowed Saint Vincent to close within five points, 71-66, in the final minute.

Junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) also had a big game for the Cougars finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while sophomore guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) had a stellar all-around performance as well Saturday recording 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) provided a lift off the bench and was the final SXU player to score in double figures with 12 points in addition to her game-best six assists. Saint Xavier never trailed in the game and led by as many as 23 points early in the second half.

Typically a team that relies on opponent's turnovers to help create its offense, SXU used a different approach and took advantage of some hot shooting and rebounding to claim Saturday's victory. The Cougars shot 53 percent from the field (30-for-57) in the game and won the rebounding battle as well, 41-39. SXU also moved the ball extremely well dishing out 24 assists as a team. Turnovers hurt the Cougars late in the game with the team totaling 27 miscues in the contest. Senior guard Janelle Reed led the Bearcats in scoring Saturday with 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field.

Saint Xavier (10-3 overall) continues play in its tournament on Sunday, December 28, with a 7 p.m. match-up against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). The winner of Sunday's game advances to Monday's championship game also at 7 p.m.
