Honolulu, Hawaii - Paced by 22 points and 12 rebounds from junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University got its Hawaiian trip off to a good start Friday with an 82-66 victory over No. 21 Westminster College (Utah) at the 2008 Hoop N' Surf Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Cougars (9-2 overall) led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but Westminster closed to within three points in the closing minutes before a barrage of SXU three-pointers secured the double-digit win.
Senior forward Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) and junior guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) each finished Friday's game with 12 points, while sophomore guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) posted 10 points and five rebounds. Both teams got off to a slow start offensively with neither team scoring over the game's first three minutes. The Cougars built a 34-21 lead at the half and shot well in the second half to secure the victory. Hannemann finished 10-for-14 (71 percent) from the field in the game. Freshman forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) provided a big lift off the bench for SXU scoring six points and pulling down two rebounds.
Saint Xavier (9-2 overall) completes its Hawaii trip on Saturday, December 20, with another tough match-up. The Cougars will take on No. 13 ranked Campbellsville University (Ky.) at 12 p.m. pacific time.
