CHICAGO - Paced by 15 points and seven rebounds by senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team won its opening game in its annual Midwest Tournament by defeating Algoma University (Ontario), 95-36, Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (8-4 overall) put away the visiting Thunderbirds early in the first half and led 45-15 at the halftime break. SXU will now take on Wilberforce University (Ohio) on Wednesday, December 17, at 8 p.m. at the Shannon Center with the winner of that game advancing to Thursday's championship.
In addition to Campbell, junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) also had a nice game Tuesday finishing with 13 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Amir Resic (Prijedor, Bosnia/East-West/Mather) also scored in double figures for the Cougars with 12 points. The outcome was never in doubt as Saint Xavier jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. SXU dominated in every facet of the game winning the battle of the boards, 48-28, and collecting 21 steals off of 34 Algoma turnovers. The Thunderbirds shot just 28 percent (13-for-47) from the field in the ballgame.
In other tournament action Tuesday, University of Saint Francis (Ind.) sophomore forward DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis finished with game-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead his team to a 95-67 victory over East-West University (Ill.). Mount Marty College (S.D.) got 21 points from junior forward Justin Peters in an exciting 72-69 win over Viterbo University (Wis.). Behind 13 points from junior forward Phil Moore, Wilberforce University (Ohio) squeaked out a 61-59 victory over Siena Heights University (Mich.). Wednesday tournament action will begin with East-West (Ill.) taking on Viterbo (Wis.) in the 2 p.m. game, Siena Heights (Mich.) and Algoma (Ontario) matching up in the 4 p.m. game and Saint Francis (Ind.) taking on Mount Marty (S.D.) in the 6 p.m. contest.
Saint Xavier (8-4 overall) continues play in its annual three-day Midwest Tournament on Wednesday, December 17, with a game against Wilberforce University (Ohio) at the Shannon Center. The match-up is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
