CHICAGO - With six of its players scoring in double figures, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team scored 64 points in the second half and pulled away for a 115-71 victory over visiting Trinity International University (Ill.) Monday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars led by just five points at the halftime break, 51-46, but shot a stellar 71 percent from the field (27-for-38) in the second half to secure the big win. SXU improves to 7-4 overall with the victory, while TIU drops to 1-14 on the season.
Sophomore guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) led all scorers with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. Junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) also played well for the Cougars posting a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds in addition to his five assists and three steals. Senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) had a solid all-around game as well with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. Sophomore guard Tyrone Smith, who finished with 14 points, led Trinity International University in Monday's game.
Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) finished with 15 points and four rebounds for Saint Xavier, while sophomore guard Dan Palombizio (Michigan City, Ind./New Buffalo) and freshman point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each chipped in 10 points toward the winning effort. The Trojans scored just 25 points in the second half and shot 30 percent from the field (9-for-30) after the break. The Cougars stiffened their defensive efforts as well after halftime racking up 12 steals, which helped to cause 17 TIU second-half turnovers.
Saint Xavier (7-4 overall) hosts its annual three-day Midwest Tournament starting Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Shannon Center. The Cougars will take on Algoma University College (Ontario) in the fourth and final game of the day tomorrow at 8 p.m.
