CHICAGO - Paced by a 17-point outing by senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled away early for a 90-71 victory over visiting Ashford University (Iowa) Friday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-4 overall) led 46-33 at the halftime break and shot an impressive 55 percent (16-for-29) in the second half to secure the 19-point win. Turnovers were a problem all night for the Saints recording 32 miscues in the ballgame with 20 of them coming off of SXU steals.
Sophomore guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) had a nice game Friday scoring 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field for the Cougars. Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC) also provided a big lift off the bench with 14 points and four rebounds, while junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) finished in double figures in scoring as well with 12 points. Saint Xavier scored an impressive 39 points off turnovers in Friday's victory and moved the ball well posting 20 assists as a team. The Cougars took an early 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of play and never trailed the rest of the way. Junior guard Daniel Joiner led Ashford University with 31 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the floor.
Saint Xavier (6-4 overall) continues its home stand on Monday, December 15, with a game against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
