CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) hit four free throws in the final 24 seconds of regulation to help the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team ice its victory, 80-73, over NCAA Division III Wheaton College (Ill.) Friday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (8-2 overall) racked up 18 steals as a team in the game, while Wheaton (3-6 overall) committed 25 turnovers. Junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a solid outing for SXU finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the winning effort.
Young posted 15 points for Saint Xavier to also finish in double figures in scoring and shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the line in the game. She also recorded four rebounds, three assists and three steals Friday. Junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) scored nine points for the Cougars. SXU jumped out to an early 11-4 lead and controlled a majority of the first half building a 43-35 halftime advantage. In the second half, the Thunder used an early scoring run to close the gap and the game stayed tight the rest of the way with the Cougars nursing a three-point lead, 74-71, with just over two minutes to play. SXU took advantage of the Wheaton miscues throughout Friday's ballgame scoring 28 of its 80 points off turnovers.
Saint Xavier (8-2 overall) heads to Honolulu, Hawaii, next week to participate in the Sunshine Shootout on December 19-20. The Cougars will open the event with a game against No. 21 ranked Westminster University (Utah) at 2 p.m. (pacific) on Friday, December 19, and then wrap up play at the Shootout with a 12 p.m. (pacific) game Saturday, December 20, against No. 13 Campbellsville University (Ky.).
