Women's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 6, 2008
Bourbonnais, Ill. - Scoring 51 points in the first half and leading by 31 points at the break, the No. 10 Saint Xavier University women's basketball team pulled away early for a convincing 97-55 victory over Pikeville College (Ky.) Saturday in the final day of the two-day CCAC Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars (7-2 overall) used a strong offensive and defensive presence to wear down the Lady Bears, who fall to 8-3 overall on the season with Saturday's loss. The usual suspects of junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) and junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) led SXU again to the victory. McClain finished with 21 points, while Hannemann posted 14 points and seven rebounds. Following the event, Hannemann was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP), while McClain earned a spot on the all-tournament squad.
Junior guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) had a nice game off the bench scoring nine points. In fact, 12 of Saint Xavier's 13 active players scored in Saturday's ballgame making the win a true team effort. Pikeville had trouble shooting the ball from the onset hitting just 25 percent (8-for-25) of its shots from the field to dig itself an early hole. Turnovers also did not help the Lady Bears as they finished with 27 miscues in the ballgame.
Saint Xavier (7-2 overall) returns home to host NCAA Division III foe Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday, December 12. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
