Women's Basketball - Sat, Nov. 22, 2008
Jackson, Tenn. - Despite another outstanding effort by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team ended play at the 2008 Jackson Rotary Classic with a 65-52 loss to No. 9 Lambuth University (Tenn.) Saturday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Jackson, Tenn. Hannemann finished the game with a double-double performance of 15 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, and never came off the floor in the frustrating loss. SXU ends its three-game stretch at the Classic with a big 55-54 win over No. 3 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), but tough losses to the two hometown teams, No. 1 Union University (Tenn.) and No. 9 Lambuth, respectively.
The Cougars started the game ice cold missing all five of their shot attempts and turning the ball over five times in the first five minutes of play. However, the defense kept things close as Lambuth took an early 9-0 lead before two free throws by Hannemann at the 14:37 mark of the half ended SXU's scoring drought. Saint Xavier closed the gap and pulled to within one, 15-14, on a breakaway lay-up by sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) with 7:58 to play in the half. Later in the period, Lambuth used a 7-0 run to build its advantage to 26-18 with 2:44 remaining before halftime. Fortunately, a late technical foul by Lambuth with 21 seconds following a regular foul allowed SXU to hit four straight free throws and narrow the deficit to five points, 30-25, at the halftime break. Saint Xavier shot 23 percent (6-for-26) from the field and committed 14 turnovers in the first frame.
The Cougars started the second half on fire scoring nine unanswered points and taking their first lead of the game, 32-30, on a three-point play by Hannemann at the 16:04 mark. The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard in the second half on a free throw with 13:42 to play in the game to cut SXU's lead to three, 34-31. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, the free throw sparked a 17-0 run that lasted over seven minutes and left the Cougars staring at a 13-point deficit, 47-34, with 8:28 remaining. The offense returned and freshman guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) hit a big three-pointer with 6:30 to play to cut Lambuth's lead to six, 47-41. However, SXU continued having difficulty getting shots to fall down the stretch and the Eagles took their largest lead of the game, 60-44, with just under four minutes to play in regulation.
Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) returns to the Chicagoland area and will take on Judson University (Ill.) on Tuesday, November 25, in Elgin, Ill. The road game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
