Women's Basketball - Fri, Nov. 21, 2008
Jackson, Tenn. - Despite trailing by just three points at the half, the No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not contain No. 1 Union University (Tenn.) in the second half and fell, 91-62, Friday night on day two of the Jackson Rotary Classic at Union's Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Jackson, Tenn. Union's 6-4 senior center Josephine Owino finished with 30 points (game-high) and team-best 10 rebounds, and was unstoppable in the second half where she tallied 22 of her scoring total. Junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) had a monster game for the Cougars posting 20 points and 13 rebounds, while junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) led the team in scoring with 22 points.

The first half proved to be a battle as Union (8-0 overall) built an early 14-5 lead in the game's first seven minutes, but the Cougars quickly closed the gap with a three-pointer by sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) and back-to-back lay-ups by Hannemann. Leading 14-12 at the 11-minute mark of the half, Union rebuilt its lead by making a 7-0 scoring run over the next two minutes. However, SXU weathered the storm again and cut its deficit to four, 23-19, with eight minutes to play before halftime on a lay-up by Hannemann. The Bulldogs would not let up and used another 7-0 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 30-19, with just under seven minutes left in the half. This time, a three-pointer by Barone sparked a 14-6 scoring run by Saint Xavier to put them down by a single possession, 36-33, heading into the break.

Owino, who scored the Bulldogs' first 13 points of the period to open up a 49-35 advantage, controlled the start of the second half. A hook shot by Hannemann would bring SXU to within eight points, 55-47, with 12 minutes to play in the game, but Union would respond with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to put the game out of reach. The Cougars hit just 30 percent (10-for-33) of its shots from the field after halftime, while the Bulldogs hit from a 64 percent clip (18-for-28) after the break.

Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) concludes its play in the Jackson Rotary Classic on Saturday, November 22, with a game against No. 9 ranked Lambuth University (Tenn.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Fred DeLay Gymnasium in Jackson.
