CHICAGO - Despite nine kills apiece by senior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York), the No. 5 seeded Saint Xavier University volleyball team ended its season Tuesday night with a loss to No. 4 seed Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in the first round of the 2008 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Volleyball Tournament in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (12-33 overall) lost the playoff match in three straight games 21-25, 20-25 and 19-25.
Senior outside hitter Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) also played tough for SXU Tuesday finishing with seven kills and team-best 11 digs, while senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) garnered six kills and three total blocks. Freshman Ashley August (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) helped set up the offensive attack with 20 set assists.
Saint Xavier ends its 2008 campaign with an overall record of 12-33 and finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCAC standings with a 6-4 mark. The Cougars secured the No. 5 seed in the eight-team CCAC Tournament due to conference tie-breaker rules and earned a first round match-up on the road against No. 4 seed Trinity Christian.
