Joliet, Ill. - Sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and senior goalkeeper Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) were named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week ending November 8 when the weekly honors were released by the conference Tuesday. It was the first time this season the Cougars have swept both the offensive and defensive recognition in the same week and just the second time this year that SXU has received either honor. Steinhaus claimed the offensive honor back on October 7, while freshman defender Andrea Fischer (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) earned the defensive honor for Saint Xavier back on September 9.
In the Cougars' two CCAC playoff games last week, Steinhaus was an offensive force. She finished with two unassisted goals in SXU's 4-2 semifinals victory over No. 8 ranked and previously unbeaten Trinity Christian College (Ill.) and then followed that performance with a team-best two shots-on-goal in Saturday's 1-0 overtime win over No. 2 seeded Trinity International University (Ill.) to claim the CCAC Tournament crown. Grant was just as tough defensively for the Cougars recording 10 saves in the semifinals victory over Trinity Christian. She then posted her second shutout of the season by making four saves against a tough Trinity International squad in the conference tournament championship.
Saint Xavier (10-9-1 overall) will now take on No. 12 ranked Trinity Christian College in a play-in game to determine which team will represent the CCAC in the 2008 NAIA Women's Soccer National Tournament. The play-in game will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, at the Redmond Athletic Complex in Bensenville, Ill.
