Oskaloosa, Iowa - Senior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) finished with 298 passing yards and three touchdowns (one rushing) to help propel No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University (Ill.) over unranked William Penn University (Iowa), 35-16, in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League action Saturday at Community Stadium in Oskaloosa, Iowa. With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the WPU falls to 2-3 and 0-1 in the MSFA standings.

Senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) also had a nice outing for SXU finishing with six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown, while junior wideout Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tallied three catches for 62 yards and a score. Perryman completed 24 of his 36 pass attempts in the game as well as rushing six times for 13 yards. Sophomore running back Steve Strimel (New Lenox, Ill./Joliet Junior College/Lincoln-Way Central) led Saint Xavier's ground attack with 14 rushes for 50 yards.

The Cougar defense also played a huge part in Saturday's victory against William Penn. After building a 16-9 halftime advantage behind touchdown receptions from Nowman and Gerritsen, respectively, and a 45-yard field goal by sophomore Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington), the Saint Xavier defense blocked a WPU punt and freshman defensive back Brad Bourg (Joliet, Ill./University of Louisville/Joliet Catholic) returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

The defense continued to play tough recording a safety later in the third quarter to put Saint Xavier ahead, 25-9, with 7:49 remaining in the period. Longest picked up another field goal (37 yards) with 16 seconds left in the third quarter to extend the Cougar lead to 19 points, 28-9. After a touchdown by William Penn early in the fourth quarter, Perryman ran it into the endzone 13 yards for the game's final score with 4:07 remaining in the game.

Saint Xavier (4-1 overall/1-0 MSFA) returns home on Saturday, October 8, to face No. 5 McKendree College (Ill.) for a MSFA Midwest League showdown at SXU Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
