Deerfield, Ill. - A goal by junior defender Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) just a minute and 24 seconds into overtime gave the No. 4 seeded Saint Xavier University women's soccer team a dramatic 1-0 victory over No. 2 seed Trinity International University (Ill.) in the championship game of the 2008 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon in Deerfield, Ill. Sophomore defender Jessica Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) provided the assist on the game-winning goal. Despite winning the tournament, the Cougars will still have to play a play-in game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.), the 2008 CCAC regular season champs, to determine which team will advance to the NAIA National Tournament.
Senior keeper Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) notched her second shutout of the season Saturday recording four saves for SXU. Saint Xavier had six shots-on-goal in the contest compared to just four by the Trojans. Sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was tough offensively for the Cougars recording two shots-on-goal in the game. After finishing the regular season with three straight CCAC losses, SXU won all three of its conference tournament games over the past week, including the big 4-2 victory over No. 8 ranked and previously unbeaten Trinity Christian Wednesday. Saint Xavier (10-9-1 overall) will now have to take on CCAC regular-season champion Trinity Christian College in a one-game playoff game that will decide which team will represent the conference in the 2008 NAIA National Tournament, which begins on November 22. The playoff game between SXU and TCC will take place on Saturday, November 15. Site and time for the game have yet to be determined.
