Men's Basketball - Sat, Nov. 8, 2008
CHICAGO - Senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) and sophomore guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) each scored 25 points over two games to help lead the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to a split in its two games at the Mitchell Memorial Classic hosted by Trinity Christian College this weekend in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars dropped Friday night's game to Cornerstone University (Mich.), 82-66, but bounced back Saturday to take home an 86-66 victory over Silver Lake College (Wis.).

In the opening game Friday against Cornerstone, Johnstone finished with 16 points to lead SXU. However, poor shooting hurt the Cougars as they hit only 29 percent (23-for-79) of their shots from the field, while CU shot from a 53 percent clip (31-for-59). Senior guard Paris Davis (Maywood, Ill./St. Joseph) also scored in double figures Friday finishing with 10 points for SXU. Saint Xavier led, 35-34, at the break, but shot 28 percent (9-for-32) in the second half, including hitting just two of its 14 three-point attempts.

The Cougars shot the ball much better in Saturday's victory over Silver Lake hitting 46 percent (33-for-72) of their field goal attempts. Broughton finished the game with 17 points to lead all scorers, while Davis again chipped in 10 points for the second straight game. Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) had nine points and a team-best eight rebounds for SXU. The Cougar defense played tough in the contest collecting 16 steals, which helped lead to 28 Silver Lake turnovers.

Saint Xavier (2-2 overall) will play NCAA Division I Chicago State University (Ill.) in an exhibition game on Friday, November 14, at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The exhibition is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
