Grand Rapids, Mich. - For the second straight meet, Saint Xavier University freshman Alyssa Driscoll (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) led the No. 18 ranked Cougar women's cross country team across the finish line at the NAIA Great Lakes Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. The invitational was completely filled with NAIA participants, including a large number of nationally recognized programs. In fact, nine of the 20 participating teams were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 heading into Saturday's meet. The Cougars finished seventh overall out of the 20 teams partcipating. Driscoll finished the 5K race (5,000 meters) with a time of 19:18 en route to a 31st place individual finish.
Finishing second for Saint Xavier Saturday for the first time this season was freshman Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Catholic Central), who notched a new personal-best time of 19:27. Sophomore Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), junior Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and junior Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) all finished within four seconds of one another in 19:30 (44th), 19:32 (48th) and 19:34 (51st), respectively. Rounding out the top seven finishers for SXU were juniors Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and Megan Syring (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). Janosz tied her personal-best time at 19:55 in 64th place, while Syring ran a 20:46 for 91st place.
"I was thrilled with how our team performed, especially among such tough NAIA competition," said SXU women's cross country/track coach Lisa Ebel. "Our top five runners finished within 16 seconds of each other and that is extremely important heading into our conference meet in two weeks. The team is running better as the meets become more important and, as a coach, I cannot ask for more than that."
Saint Xavier has now wrapped up its regular season slate and will participate in the 2008 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 8, in Bourbonnais, Ill. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais.Click here for results from the Aquinas Meet
