Georgetown, Ky. - Despite 28 kills and five service aces by senior outside hitter Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team nabbed just one win out of its four matches at the Georgetown College (Ky.) Bone Yard Brawl Volleyball Tournament in Georgetown, Ky., over the weekend. The Cougars (12-29 overall) faced extremely tough competition at the event falling to No. 10 Georgetown, No. 8 Lindenwood University (Mo.), and No. 28 Indiana Wesleyan University (Ind.) before wrapping up the tourney with a victory over Davenport University (Mich.).
In its first match Friday against host Georgetown (Ky.), SXU fell in four games 13-25, 25-17, 17-25, and 12-25 despite nine kills from Winkler. Senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished the match with 19 digs for the Cougars. In Friday's late match against Lindenwood, senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) had eight kills, but SXU fell in four games again 9-25, 15-25, 25-19 and 17-25. Freshman Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) had 16 set assists, while Guide tallied 17 digs defensively.
Saturday's first match against Indiana Wesleyan was another tough one with the Cougars losing in three straight games 13-25, 19-25 and 15-25. Winkler led the offensive attack with six kills, while Guide posted nine digs. SXU ended the trip on a positive note getting a victory against Davenport University (Mich.) in four games 25-21, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-20. The Cougars got eight kills apiece from Winkler and Guay as well as senior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York). Guide finished the match with 25 digs toward the winning effort.
Saint Xavier (12-29 overall/6-3 CCAC) takes on NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside (Wis.) on Wednesday, October 29, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
